God's Salvation in the Midst of the Earth

Text:     Psalm 74:12

“For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.”

Introduction

All throughout human history, and continuing to today, God has been working to save (salvage) man since his fall in the garden.  The Psalmist declared God’s working His salvation plan “in the midst of the earth,” that is to say, among mankind.

This being true then, God expects people to turn their attention upon Him and align their personal lives to God’s wonderful plan and purpose of saving mankind.

It’s God’s Plan — not Man’s — that Saves

1 Timothy 2:4 -  God wants man’s complete salvation, not merely a portion of it.  He wants man to be saved (delivered) from hell AND to come to a [fuller, more thorough and complete] knowledge of His salvation plan through His Son, Jesus, the Christ.  This is God’s will, yet man has (through Satan’s influence) interfered with God’s total plan of salvation and has introduced lies and false teachings regarding God’s total salvation purpose.

John 4:23, 24 - God requires a certain way for man to worship Him; a way in which God will accept since it is a way that will bring God glory, praise and honor.  God is seeking out people who will willingly submit to God’s way of worship.

Ephesians 2:8-10 - The Lord has in mind to prepare and preserve a special people unto Himself who will share His glory for eternity.  Such a group of people will have necessarily submitted to God’s plan, not some variation of it, in order for them to be counted among God’s specially prepared group (Titus 2:14; Titus 3:8,14).

God’s plan to bring in his earthly kingdom

Involved in God’s overall plan to save mankind is His plan to overthrow man’s (and Satan’s) rule of the earth and to establish His own righteous kingdom and world government. In fact, the main theme of the entire Bible — from the Old Testament to the New Testament —  is the establishment of God’s earthly kingdom.

Hebrews 12:28  - Such a divinely ordered kingdom, once it has arrived upon the earth, will never be destroyed or overthrown.  Nothing will shake or remove it from the earth.  In this fact we can have complete confidence that our trust in God and our willingness to serve and worship Him His way will not be in vain.

Matthew 6:25-33 -  Because the kingdom is such a vital organ in God’s scope and purpose for man, we are to seek it first and foremost in our lives.  Nothing should interfere with our wanting to receive the very best in God’s glorious kingdom.

Man's General Response to God’s Plan

Romans  3:9-24 -  Although God has reached out to man in securing such a wonderful plan for his salvation, most of humanity has ignored God’s plan for saving them from destruction (John 3:16-18).

Matthew 13:13-16 -  Even those who are among God’s covenant people can become blinded to His total plan to save them. Israel, God’s covenant nation, had drifted from God’s Truth for so long that they were unable to recognize His salvation plan as it was being worked out before their very eyes. Sadly, many members in true, New Testament churches have likewise become dull in paying heed to the Word of God and will not see their spiritual efforts rewarded due to sinful, careless living.

For What are We to be Seeking?

Colossians  3:1-3  -  Although God has reached out to man in securing such a wonderful plan for his salvation, most of humanity has ignored God’s plan for saving them from destruction (John 3:16-18).

Romans 2:1-11  -  Those who take God seriously, and who make it their life’s aim to seek what God has to offer, will indeed be blessed. After all, is there anything better than to be given glory, immortality and honor from Jesus Himself?

Proverbs 2:1-22  -  It is not that wisdom is unavailable for man to find, for God has always made it available for man to acquire and to enjoy. The problem is that man has refused to receive that wisdom made available to him.

Psalm 105:4  -  God is a God who is close by and has made Himself available for any and all who sincerely in their hearts want to know Him. His strength is given to us to overcome and to remain within the scope of His salvation purpose. If we choose to forsake God, it won’t be because He did not supply enough strength.

Psalm 119:2  -  How are we to seek God once we acknowledge His saving grace and His available wisdom and strength? With our whole heart! Really, is there any other way? Is there any other way that God will accept? Can we fool God into thinking we are earnestly seeking Him with our whole heart when in reality we are not?

The Coming City for which We are to Seek

The reason we are committed to believing and submitting to God’s expressed plan for saving us is because what He says He is able to perform. There is nothing that He cannot do if He so chooses (Jeremiah 32:17, 27).

One such accomplishment that the Lord is desires to fulfill is the bringing down of a glorious city called New Jerusalem. This city is in the heavens with God at this time but will descend down out of the heavens to rest upon the new earth that God will have created for it.

Abraham and the patriarchs sought after such a city (Hebrews 11:10-16).

Conclusion

There is no mistaking the fact that Jesus will return as King to rule the earth, for such is what has been prophesied to occur (Luke 1:31-33 ; Revelation 11:15-18).

Jesus will sit upon the throne of David and rule from the present Jerusalem for a 1,000 years (Revelation 20:4). There will no doubt be some changes made upon Jesus’ return with regard to the present Jerusalem, inasmuch as the entire planet will undergo major renovation (Isaiah 35 ; Acts 3:19-21).

But it won’t be the New Jerusalem that Jesus will rule from as of yet. Hence, it is for Christ’s return and for our dwelling with Him in the now existing Jerusalem that we await, and indeed long for each day of our lives — only to be superseded by the coming of the New Jerusalem which will climax the thousand year “Day of the Lord.”

The question we all must ask ourselves is whether we will be ready for Christ’s return, and for the kingdom He will be bringing. Have you called upon the Lord asking Him to save you from hell? Do you believe the Scriptures and what They’re telling us what God is going to do with mankind and the earth?

Believe God and repent...and make it your decision to obey Jesus Christ! “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God [is] a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:28, 29).
